Many Filipino people unite on New Year’s Eve, which is on December 31, to celebrate a midnight meal known as the Media Noche. It is also common to stay awake to greet the coming of the New Year. New Year’s Day is also characterized by Filipinos lighting fireworks and making a lot of noise to drive away evil spirits. This belief originated from the Chinese. This occasion can be extra-special when you celebrate it with your family. My family is a bit traditional in many ways. Christmas and New Year’s Eve for us is family time spent at home, not outside in the malls or other country or place.

Let me share to you my New Year celebration 2017.

From day to night of December 31, the whole household was busy preparing for the midnight feast, consisting of Buko salad, Macaroni salad, Graham Cake, Cheesy Tuna Pesto, and  Afritada.

Compared before, there are less firecrackers maybe because of the strict implementation of banning of firecrackers and the like. But that is not a big deal, what’s important to me is we are complete and happy. My sister and I attended the 7 p.m. mass. We just want to thank God for all the blessings and guidance he had given us all throughout the year. When the clock ticked exactly at 12:00 a.m., everyone was shouting “Happy New Year!”. Our neighbors were also outside their house. Together, we made noise! Wooo. That moment was a blast.

A new year means a fresh new slate. You’ve got the whole year to embrace new experiences, friendships, lessons, and even challenges. As we say goodbye to 2016, let us count not only the losses, heartaches, and disappointments but also those blessings we have received from God in the past year. Let us remember the lessons the year has brought us, blow a kiss to the pain, and look forward to a better brighter year in 2017. Whatever happened in 2016 will lead us to “All is well” in 2017 and the many years to come. Put a smile on your face and start the year with a bang!
